19 Year Old Age Group

Due to the cancellation of the 2020 dive season, MCDL is allowing 19 year old divers to compete in 2021. This is governed by the rules below.

Rules of Competition for 19 Year Old Divers

  1. For the 2021 Dive Season only, divers aged 19 (as of June 1, 2021) are eligible to participate in MCDL.
  2. 19 year olds will dive in a separate age group from other divers.
  3. Dive requirements for the 19 year old age group are the same for the 15-18 age group.
  4. No diver may “dive-up” into the 19 year old age group.
  5. Except as noted below, all 19 year olds will be exhibition divers, and will not factor into meet scoring.
    1. After the conclusion of the meet and the score is calculated, the following rules apply in the event of a TIE.
    2. The highest scoring 19 year male and female divers for each team shall be changed from exhibition to scoring status, and the meet shall be re-scored. Should one team not have a diver to change in each of the boys and girls categories, this shall not prevent the other team from changing the scoring status of their diver.
    3. Standard age group scoring will apply for the divers marked as “scoring” (5pts for 1st, 3 for 2nd, 1 for 3rd, with no single team able to get all three places).
    4. After the application of b) and c), if the meet is still tied, the process shall be repeated with next highest scoring divers until either the tie is broken or no more 19 year divers remain in exhibition status.
    5. Notwithstanding the above, a 19 year old diver who does not perform the required number and type of dives for the age group shall not be changed from exhibition to scoring.

Example #1

Team AA and BB are competing.  Team AA has a 19 year old female diver (Jill Smith) who scores 120 (and is marked as exhibition). There are no other 19 year olds. After the first pass of scoring, AA and BB are tied with a score of 55-55.

At this point, Jill Smith is changed from exhibition to scoring.  As there are no others to change, the meet is then re-scored. As Jill will finish in first place in the 19 year old girls group, she will get 5 pts, resulting in Team AA winning the meet by a score of 60-55.

Example #2

Team AA and BB are competing.  Team AA has a 19 year old female diver (Jill Smith) who scores 120 (and is marked as exhibition). Team BB has a 19 year old male diver (John Murphy). There are no other 19 year olds. After the first pass of scoring, AA and BB are tied with a score of 55-55.

At this point, Jill Smith is changed from exhibition to scoring, as is John Murphy.  As there are no others to change, the meet is then re-scored. As Jill will finish in first place in the 19 year old girls group, she will get 5 pts. Likewise, John Murphy will get 5 pts in the male group. The final result will be a tie at 60-60.
